Considered a bit of David Livingstone - Kingsley Holgate is one of Africa`s most colourful modern day explorers. An adventurer, author, TV Personality and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Kingsley is often referred to as the Grey Beard of African Adventure. The Zulus call him “Nondwayisa uya Shinga” - the Jacana, the African Lilly Trotter that stalks the rivers and lakes of Africa on long legs. Quite an apt name for someone who has become one of Africa’s greatest present day adventurers.

Getaway Magazine calls him their Explorer in Residence, the most travelled man in Africa.

Born in Natal on 28th February 1946. Youngest son of a missionary teacher family and named after Kingsley Fairbridge an adventurous missionary who went to Rhodesia in the early days.

Kingsley`s adventures, many of which are world firsts, include his son Ross and wife Gill:

· They have crossed the continent from Cape Town to Cairo and Alexandria in   open boats.

· They survived the Zambezi and Congo Rivers in the footsteps of Livingstone and   Stanley.

         · They completed a circumnavigation of Lake Turkana (Northern Kenya) in the        world’s largest desert lake.

        · Using Land Yachts they were the first people to circumnavigate the           Makgadigadi Salt Pans in central Botswana.

      · Called ‘Extreme Latitude’ and travelling on foot, by bicycle, bullock cart,         dugout and Land Rover. Kingsley Holgate and his adventurous family have         circumnavigated the world by land following the Tropic of Capricorn,

  · Other expeditions included a number of journeys in the footsteps of the early     explorers in which the Holgate family has survived countless attacks of     Malaria,  the threat of bandits, wild animals and the danger of unexploded     landmines.

After countless expeditions it was time to give something back to Mama Africa.

  · In an expedition called “African Rainbow” – Travelling by     Land Rover convoy, Arab sailing dhow and inflatable     boats from Durban to the Somali border and back, they     distributed tens of thousands of mosquito nets to       pregnant mothers and children under the age of five in       a campaign called “One Net One Life”.

        · More recently “The Outside Edge”, a 448 day 33          country geographic and humanitarian expedition has           been hailed as the most successful expedition ever

undertaken in support of Malaria Prevention - including Rite to Sight and Teaching on the Edge
