“For
the traveller who is a true lover of wildlife, where can she be
found in such a variety as in Africa, where is she so mysterious,
fantastic and savage, where are her charms so strong… her
moods so strange… “ like the Victorian Explorer Henry
Morton Stanley, my soul too has been claimed by Mama Africa.
Kingsley`s adventures, many of which are world firsts, include his
son Ross and wife Gill. Other expeditions have included a number
of journeys in the footsteps of the early explorers in which the
Holgate family has survived countless attacks of Malaria, the threat
of bandits, wild animals and the danger of unexploded landmines.
· In an expedition called Afrika Odyssey they crossed the
continent from Cape Town to Cairo, Alexandria and the
mouth of The Nile in open boats following the rivers
and lakes of Africa.
· They survived the Zambezi and Congo Rivers in the footsteps
of Livingstone and Stanley.
· Following in the footsteps of early explorer Count Teleki
they completed a circumnavigation
of the world’s largest desert lake - Lake Turkana (in Northern
Kenya).
· With their back sides just 6 inches off the ground, overtaking
springbuck and ostrich, they were the first people to
circumnavigate the Makgadigadi Salt Pans in central
Botswana - using land yachts.
· Called
‘Extreme Latitude’ and travelling on foot, by bicycle,
bullock cart and
Land Rover, Kingsley Holgate and his adventurous family have circumnavigated
the world by land following the Tropic of Capricorn.
· In an expedition called “Livingston’s
Last Journey” The Holgates paid tribute to
Chuma and Susi the 2 black unsung heroes of African exploration
who carried Dr Livingstone’s
sun dried corpse all the way from Lake Bangwelu in Northern
Zambia to Bagamoyo opposite Zanzibar.
· Using a copy of Dr David Livingstone's personal field
notebook, the Rio Ruvumo Lake of Stars expedition
followed Livingstone’s 1862 journey up the Rovuma (that
wild and somewhat unexplored river that separates Northern
Mozambique from Southern Tanzania) and onto Lake

Malawi, Lake of Stars.
·
Using an open boat, which like H M Stanley`s was called the
Lady Alice, the Holgate Team undertook a journey to circumnavigate
Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria.
· As a tribute to Captain Frederick
Courtenay Selous, the
Rufiji Expedition tracked the river from its head waters
on the Kilombero through the Selous Game Reserve
onto the giant Rufiji Delta to end at Mafia Island.

· In an expedition called “African Rainbow”
– Travelling by Land Rover convoy and a 35 tonne Arab
sailing dhow called “The Spirit of Adventure” the expedition
travelled from
Durban
to the Somali border and back, distributing tens of thousands of
mosquito nets to pregnant mothers and children under the age of
five in a campaign called “One Net One Life”.
· More recently “The Outside Edge”, a 448 day
33 country geographic and humanitarian expedition has been hailed
as the most successful expedition ever undertaken in support of
Malaria Prevention – it included a Right to Sight and Teaching
on the Edge Programmes. www.outsideedge.co.za
